Guide to Motril

Posted on 21 December 2014

The Town of Motril is on the Costa Tropical and lies about 100 kms to the east of Malaga and about 65 kms to the south of Granada.

If you are planning to visit Motril as part of your holiday or are considering stopping there it is best to try and fly into Granada or Malaga Airport.

Explore more of Motril if you hire a car from Malaga Airport and  you can have the freedom to explore.

Malaga Airport is obviously a little further away from Motril than Granada but there are an enormous amount of flights to choose from and the drive along the coast is a pleasant one.

Granada Airport is also the airport that serves the ski resorts up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains but only British Airways offer a flight from London city airport.

Motril is a fairly large town with around fifty thousands residents and has a large port area that offers regular ferries to Morocco. You can also find both a fishing port and a yachting marina in Motril.

Explore the quay or take a day out to head up to the Sierra Nevada ski resorts with your rental car.

The main sightseeing feature of the town is the main Town Hall, an impressive Baroque style building that was built in 1631. It is also worth seeking out the Casa de Las Palmas which is a well preserved 16C Sugar Mill.

Motril also has its own Golf Course, Club de Golf Los Moriscos that has a neat 9 hole course that is set within some beautiful scenery.

For beaches you need to head to either side of Motril port where you will find Playa Granada and Playa Poniente. Playa de Poniente is the livelier of the two beaches and generally offers a full range of water sports activities.
