Posted on 24 September 2025

Caminito del Rey, located in the Gaitanes Gorge (Desfiladero de los Gaitanes) in Málaga, is one of the most spectacular destinations in Europe. This famous walk, also known as the King´s Path,  combines nature, history and adventure, with suspended footbridges along vertical cliffs – a unique setting for hiking and photography. In this guide, you’ll find essential information to plan your visit if you’re exploring the Costa del Sol in southern Spain.

The history of the King’s Path: from a dangerous path to a safe attraction

Although today it is considered one of Málaga’s most touristic attractions, the reason for its construction was very different. Built between 1901 and 1905,

the aim of the walkway was to connect the facilities of the Hydroelectric Company of El Chorro.

Over the decades, the lack of maintenance turned it into one of the most dangerous trails in Europe. Finally, in 2015, the authorities completely restored the route and reopened it to the public, recovering an exceptional example of industrial heritage. Since then, thousands of travelers from all over the world have enjoyed this 7.7 kms pathway, with sections suspended 100 meters above the ground.

The new hanging bridge

In March, construction began on a new hanging bridge in the Gaitanes Gorge. It will be 110 meters long, the largest of its kind in Spain, and suspended 50 meters above the ground. With a gentle slope, it will make the final stretch of the route easier for visitors.
