Granada

Offering a diverse range of terrain to explore either by foot or by hire car, Granada is the capital of the province with the same name and it situated in the eastern part of Andalucia. There is the coastal area with its warm climate, the fertile Genil plain and mountainous Sierra Nevada region where you can ski with the 2,481 metre Mulcahen which is the highest peak on the Spanish Peninsula.

Originally founded by the Romans who built the city and called it Ilbyr, the Arabs invaded the Spanish peninsula during the 8th century and gave it the name Granada. It last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492 when it was ruled over by Queen Isabel of Castile and her husband, Ferdinand of Aragon.

The city has been shaped by the hills where the old districts were founded. The Alzambra is a magnificent piece of universal architecture which was built on the hills overlooking Granada under the Nazari Dynasty in the fourteenth century. It is a compound of buildings including the Generalife summer palace with spectacular fountains and gardens and the massive palace of Charles V which is an outstanding example of Spanish Renaissance architecture.

The new part is situated on the plain crossed by the Gran Via de Colon and Calle de Los Reyes Catolicos where the busy streets around the Cathedral are found.
