Torre De La Vela at the Alhambra

The Alhambra is one of Spain’s most important historical monuments and the perfect place to enjoy the sunset. This stunning fortress complex is an icon of Islamic architecture and one of the best-preserved palaces of its type in the world. Work began on the fortress all the way back in 1238, and it has since become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The complex has many amazing features, not least of all the amazing Alcazaba (citadel) with its 82ft high watchtower called Torre De La Vela. By climbing the stairs of this old tower, you can treat yourself to panoramic views of the popular Albaicín district and Granada’s city centre, made all the more beautiful at sunset.

Mirador de San Nicolás

The Mirador de San Nicolás is perhaps the most famous viewpoint in all of Granada, being an immensely popular hilltop square known for its epic views at sunset. It’s even been praised by a former president of the United States when Bill Clinton said it had “the most beautiful sunset in the world.” The viewpoint may be busy, but the views of the Alhambra can’t be beaten, with the towering Sierra Nevada mountains looming behind the mighty fortress.
The viewpoint is part of the Church of Saint Nicholas – which is where it gets its name from. Ash, from the travel blog Abroad with Ash, has enjoyed this glorious location herself and shared this insight: “Keep an eye on the time to make sure you arrive at Mirador San Nicolas, also called Plaza de San Nicolas, before sunset. I will warn you that it’s going to be crowded.
“Once you arrive, you’ll see why, as the view of the Alhambra is spectacular. It’s lively this time of day as there are usually flamenco dancers and guitarists performing, vendors selling cheap souvenirs, and visitors enjoying a glass of wine while taking in the view.”

Silla del Moro (The Moor’s Chair)

Silla del Moro (or The Moor’s Chair) is a 12th-century hillside ruin and one of the best locations to enjoy the sunset in Granada. Also known as St Helena’s Castle, the structure originates from the Nasrid period and had been largely neglected until the 1920s. Today, locals and visitors alike make the steep hike up to enjoy the location, about 853 metres above sea level.
Situated on the aptly named Cerro del Sol (Hill of the Sun), it was once part of a defensive system for the Generalife and the gardens of the Alhambra. It would have been particularly exposed to enemy assaults, but this strategic position today provides some spectacular views of the Alhambra at sunset (from the opposite direction of the Mirador de San Nicolas).
Tara from the travel blog Vegan Family Adventures, has visited Silla del Moro and spoke to us about her thoughts on the location: “We absolutely loved our visit to Silla del Moro. Silla del Moro is well-known for its stunning views of the Alhambra and the city of Granada. We found the views from this location to be breathtaking, offering a unique perspective of the Alhambra Palace and the surrounding landscape. It’s a lovely spot to take in the beauty of Granada and its iconic landmarks.”

Mirador de San Cristóbal

It might not be as famous as the Mirador de San Nicolas, but the Mirador de San Cristóbal is an equally impressive viewpoint that should not be overlooked. This special spot is also on the quieter side, meaning you can enjoy your sunset views without so much hustle and bustle. Those who hike up to the viewpoint from the Church of San Cristóbal will be treated to views of the ancient citadel of the Albaicin.
Located in one of the district’s highest points, the Mirador de San Cristóbal is the perfect place to catch a sunset as you look out towards the walls of the Zirid kings, the sprawling Alhambra fortress, the mighty Sierra Nevada mountains, and the belltower of the Granada’s glorious cathedral.
Molly, from the Spanish travel blog Piccavey, told us that Mirador de San Cristóbal is her favourite Granada viewpoint: “Although the most popular viewpoint of the Alhambra is Mirador de San Nicolas, I like to visit the Mirador de San Cristobal as it is less busy and offers a different perspective of the iconic view of the Alhambra and city below. It is also accessible by car, so it’s easy to get to if you don’t want to walk up the Albaicin´s steep cobbled streets.”
