Andalucia is a region with a deep history, and Almeria is no different. Its ancient city dates all the way back to the Phoenicians in the 1st<\/sup> millennium BC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were other famous inhabitants of Almeria, however, including the Roman Empire, when it was an important trading centre. Outside the city you can still see the remains of the ancient Roman road of Bayyana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a short Visigoth rule, Almeria came under Muslim dominion in the Middle Ages, which is when the city reached the peak of its historical significance. Almeria\u2019s most famous attraction hails from this period in history, the magnificent Al<\/span><\/a>cazaba<\/span><\/a>. This 10th-century fortress is a sight to behold, the second largest of its kind in Andalucia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almeria eventually fell under Catholic control in the 16th<\/sup> century, and today, you can visit the beautiful Cathedral of the Incarnation, filled with gorgeous architectural features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
