The historic city of Malaga was first occupied by the Phoenicians in the eighth century BC (who named it Malaca). The Moors invaded in the eighth century and ruled until Christian forces took control in 1487. It was one of the leading centres for trade and industry in Spain but went into a decline during the Moors revolt, and did not prosper again until the nineteenth century when Spaniards in the north began to invest in textile factories, sugar refineries and shipyards. A struggling Republican stronghold during the Spanish Civil War, falling to the Nationalists after the Italians bombed the city on 193, it had a chequered history until Franco’s regime in the 1960\u00b4s started up tourism and Malaga again started to flourish.<\/p>\n

Exploring Malaga city can not be done in only one day. The city offers many famous museums like Pablo Picasso Museum, Carmen Thyssen Museum, CAC museum, Pompidou Museum, The Russian Collection and the Automobile Museum.\u00a0 There are also lots of shopping opportunities and one should not miss out to visit the main pedestrian street Calle Larios.<\/p>\n

Malaga has a mountainous backdrop but is on the Mediterranean Sea. You can explore the many towns and villages inland or drive along the coast as far as Gibraltar or even farther to Tarifa which is and a wild and beautiful area which is famous for its sailing and windsurfing bordering the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n

At the moment the railway network only extends as far as Fuengirola. There is a bus service which links the coast as far as Estepona but which involves several changes. The easiest way to explore is by car.
