La Herradura

The whole area around La Herradura is beautiful, it’s a surprise that the Costa Tropical doesn’t feature more on the tourist maps; its scenery is a backdrop of the towering Sierra Nevada Mountains leading down to the Mediterranean.

The shelter that the mountains provide means that the farming community are able to harvest sub-tropical fruits such as Avocados, Olives, Almonds, Mangos etc as the lush green valleys are protected from the harsh northerly winds that sweep across the Sierra Nevada.

The main feature of the Costa Tropical is the snow-capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada, which contain the highest peek in Spain and the most southern ski resort in Europe.

If you are visiting La Herradura over the cooler winter months of November, December, January and February then it is possible to drive up into the mountains and combine a skiing holiday with your winter sun holiday.

The beaches around La Herradura are a mixture of sandy stretches and small pebble covered coves with good clean, safe swimming conditions. The main beach that most people head for is La Herradura Beach itself, which can be found in front of the promenade in La Herradura.

The beach is about 2 km long and is backed by a promenade that is lined with shops, restaurants and cafes to keep you fed and occupied. During the peek summer months there are also lifeguards positioned along the beach and the local council also provides toilets, showers and changing areas for free.

Within the town of La Herradura you will find a large and varied selection of places to eat including several Spanish restaurants that specialize in creating menus from local regional cuisine. There are also a few German and Italian restaurants.

All in all a holiday to La Herradura offers you the peace and quiet that one associates with the Costa Tropical together with access to some of the best beaches, skiing and scenery in Spain.
